Scholarships and Awards Posted on March 9th, 2010 by

Each spring semester, the Dean of Students coordinates a variety of awards, scholarships and recognition of individuals and organizations that do good work.  Please help us by identifying Gustavus students, staff and  organizations that are deserving of the following awards.

Bunn-Swenson Scholarship
Established as a memorial to students Holly Bunn and Greg Swenson, this scholarship is not tied to a particular field of study, although recipients should be of sophomore standing or above.  It is intended that the recipients of this scholarship be involved in student life in leadership roles through student government or other campus organizations, including writing for student publications.  It is desired that factors such as appreciation of community and sensitivity to racial or other personal injustices also be taken into consideration in selecting scholarship awardees.

Faculty and staff who know of students who fit the criteria highlighted above, should contact the Dean of Students office dos@gustavus.edu by March 26th, who will then work with the Financial Aid Office to determine financial eligibility and to identify an appropriate scholarship recipient for next year.

Lindell Scholarship
The Edward and Patti Lindell Scholarship is awarded annually to a student of senior standing with a grade point average greater than 3.0 who has provided service and/or leadership, and has otherwise participated in Gustavus life. Financial need is NOT a requirement.  Faculty and staff who know of students who would meet the above criteria *for the fall of 2010*, may send their names and the reason(s) they believe them to be qualified to Dean of Students dos@gustavus.edu by March 26th.

GUILD OF ST. ANSGAR

Guild of St. Ansgar is an Honor Society for graduating Seniors chosen on the basis of scholarship, exceptional leadership, and diversified participation in extra-curricular activities (campus, church, community).  Up to eight percent of the senior class may be selected annually.

Seniors are asked to complete the Participation Survey. The survey is to be returned to the Dean of Students office before March 26th , and will be used by the Faculty-Student Committee for membership selection to the Guild of St. Ansgar.

Faculty members may nominate as many as eight (8) outstanding graduating seniors for membership. Nomination forms can be found online and in the Dean of Students office, and should be returned to the Dean of Students office no later than March 26th.

Paul Magnuson Student Leadership and Service Award
The Paul Magnuson Student Leadership and Service Award was established in 1991 to recognize leadership and service contributions made by current Gustavus Students.  Nominations are currently being sought for student-planned events, programs, or individual expressions of leadership by students during the 2009-2010 academic year.  Nomination forms for the Magnuson Award are available at the Dean of Students Office or online at http://gustavus.edu/deanofstudents/awards/magnuson.php. Nominations must be returned to the Dean of Students’ Office by March 26th to be given consideration.

Ovanlig Award
Awarded to a Junior or Senior demonstrating leadership in raising campus awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender rights and concerns.  The primary purpose of this endowed award of $2500 is to provide encouragement and financial support to young people who desire a Gustavus education.  It is intended that the recipient of the award be a junior or senior Gustavus student and has demonstrated leadership in raising campus awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender rights and concerns.

If you know students who fit the criteria highlighted above, please forward their names to Deirdre Rosenfeld, Associate Dean of Students drosenfe@gustavus.edu , and an application will be sent to the student.  Nominations are not necessary.  Junior and Senior Gustavus students can download applications online at http://gustavus.edu/deanofstudents/awards/ovanlig.php or by stopping by the Dean of Students Office to pick up the Ovanlig Award application.  Applications are due March 26, 2010 in the Dean of Students Office.

Award to Recognize Faculty:

Conrad Award
The Doctor Theodore E. Conrad Faculty/Staff Award was established by an anonymous donor to recognize an outstanding faculty or staff member.  As stipulated by the donor, award recipients go beyond occupational requirements through guidance, leadership and personal interest to enhance students’ experiences at Gustavus.  In identifying suitable award recipients, the campus selection committee will consider:

* direct student contact and role modeling
* advocacy for students and student issues
* an understanding of how personal circumstances affect learning
* a commitment to students’ wellbeing
* an appreciation for students’ uniqueness

Award recipients — faculty members in even-numbered years and staff members in odd-numbered years — will receive a plaque and the opportunity to designate an honorarium of $2,000 to a Gustavus student organization or student activity.    *This year, the Conrad Award winner must be a faculty member.*

Nomination packets — consisting of: (1) a completed nomination form (available online and at the Dean of Students Office), (2) a one-page letter of nomination, and (3) no more than two one-page letter of support — can be completed by students, staff or faculty and should be returned to the Dean of Students Office no later than April 1st.
