Gusties, if you’re traveling in or out of the country during spring break, please take note of the following safety tips:

* The U.S. State Department has issued alerts for travel to Mexico during spring break. This information can be found at: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3028.html

The travel alert issued on February 20, 2009 says violent crime is particularly worrisome along the U.S.-Mexico border, where automatic weapons and grenades have been used in clashes between police and drug traffickers. The situation has resulted in “firefights” between drug cartel members and both Mexican army and police. Such fights have occurred in numerous cities including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez.

  • Carry identification and medical information with you in case of emergencies
  • Tell someone your travel plans as well as any changes in them Leave valuables at home
  • Carry a cell phone with emergency contact numbers programmed into it
  • Don’t go to isolated places with strangers or people you don’t fully trust
  • If you choose to drink, do so legally and responsibly
  • Know and observe your limits
  • Avoid drinking games
  • Never accept drinks from strangers
  • Don’t leave friends stranded at parties
  • If a friend is in trouble with alcohol, call for help immediately
  • Drive sober — always.

When traveling outside the United States, be aware of travel warnings. The U.S. Department of State is a good source of information for International Travel safety. Information is available at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3028.html

Have fun and be safe. We want to see all of you back here on March 30th.
